    Default Vehicle GPS Help Please

I am thinking of purchasing a GPS for the truck. But, I need one I can see clearly. So, this means a larger screen. I see that Magellan has a series out with a 7" screen.
Does anyone have any experiences with Magellan GPS units?
    Your thoughts, etc?

Here is their site & model I was looking at: http://www.magellangps.com/Products/...-RoadMate-1700

I have and I did not like them, so I went with Garmin, nuvii a verry good unit and for a small price you get life time up grades, easy to use, can be hooked to computer for trip planning, I take mine in the boat once in awhile and mark gravel ramps and such good units, go to there web site and check them out.

GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM!

Ok as you know I am in Lake Charles, LA. I went and purchased a Nuvi 1450 Garmin with lifetime traffic and lifetime maps updates. It has a 5 inch screen. Which is larger than the last 2 TomTom units that I have had. I found out just in the last couple of weeks using this Garmin that a TomTom wouldn't make a pimple on a good GPS units butt! I travel alot, always needing to find office supply stores, laundry, grocery stores you name it. This Garmin all I have to do is touch the little pickup on the screen and it will show me the nearest hospital, police station & gas station from where I am located at.

It has a button on it for FOOD, SHOPPING AND A BUNCH OF OTHER BUTTONS ON IT! I hit say food and it will give me a list of the closest food places, from McDonalds to Burger King and then map me to them. It shows gas stations, grocery stores, laundry mats, bars, lumber yards. I am throwing out the yellow pages that I keep in the truck with me! The only thing that would make it better would be that it listed the phone number with the name and address of the business.

"ditto" on the Garmin..I have 4 Garmins..one marine for my boat and 2 more with 4.3" screens..the most recent is the 5" screen 1450LMT.....lifetime maps and traffic.....the lifetime maps are worth $60 to $100 by themself......I got this one because I wanted a larger screen....I love it and thought I got a good deal at Sams for $250...then saw an add yesterday for $179.....a terrific buy.....don't remember where I saw it.....just google it.....it shows you the posted speed limit and your speed....if you exceed the posted limit your speed changes color......it will tell you how long to get to your destination.......I don't like the Magellans...

I think these boys are right !! For what you'd pay for the Magellan ($300), you could get a seriously good Garmin (& have $100+ left in your pocket). I have a Garmin nuvi 205W (~$100) that's more than I need, works great, and has more features than I could ever hope to use (or need to use). 4" screen & window mount works for me. (just remember to remove it when you're not going to be using it for awhile ... and clean the "circle" off the windshield glass, so no nosey thieves will know you have one) You'll also need a USB cable, so you can download your map updates & all. But, if you're lucky & you already have a digital camera, like I did ... you can use the USB Cable from it (& save yourself another $20 or so).

Here's what I'm talking about, when I say a "seriously good" Garmin : Garmin nuvi 1450LMT 5" GPS with Lifetime Maps & Traffic on sale for $179.99 if you don't have any qualms about doing business thru Amazon.com --- It has a 5" screen ... w/lifetime traffic & maps (close to a $200 value).

But, I'd do like Beagle says .... go to the Garmin site & look at all their products. When you decide which one fits you best, then search that model number and see where you can get the best deal. When I first looked up the unit I show in the link (1450LMT) I found it for $229, and thought that was a good price .... THEN I did a search on just the model number, & came up with the $179.99 (new) price w/free shipping. It pays to search !!

Good luck with whatever unit you end up with.

Namgrunt what ever you do don't purchase one without lifetime map updates! PW58 got us both new TomTom units last year for Christmas! On Jan 2nd coming north out of Harrison, Arkansas in the dark in a snow storm the darned things showed us not even on the highway and they were less than a month old! She had gotten them on sale the day after Thanksgiving last year! You know what that new Hwy 65 is like from Harrison to Branson, its a good road but with little markings.

Coming over here from Richland, Mississippi to Lake Chares, LA, I had both the TomTom and the Garmin plugged in and was watching both of them. There were several roads that the TomTom didn't even show that the Garmin did show. Plus the mount on the Garmin is better. Another thing the Garmin is easier to operate.
