    Default Cooking Gar

Was down at Reelfoot Lake and caught a couple of Gar. Someone said they read in the MO Conservationist that they eat'em. Wanted to know if anyone has cleaned and eaten any? I found a site that showed how to clean them and how to cook them but what do ya think?

Throw them back or just cut the line. To many crappie out there to have to mess with a dang gar. I have heard of people canning them and using them like a salmon patty. I think I will pass.

dang shame that was a young alligator gar. They are a lot of fun to catch but don't think it would be worth the effort of cleaning.

Yea, a 2 man job, and I haven't ever seen anyone clean a fish with a hack saw
I would try it though, if some one had it all cooked up, I wouldn't go through all the trouble to clean one if I didn't know what it was going to taste like.

Never tried it myself, but have heard they have fine bones throughout the meat. Scoring it every quarter inch or so should help if you decide to try it
Caught one the other day on an ultralight rig that weighed about 10 pounds and do they ever put up a fight. Thought for a minute I had wall hanger of a green carp.:D Wasn't about to cut the line and lose a $4 spinner bait, so had quite a tussle getting him in the boat to get the lure back

$4 spinner bait on a Ultra Lite? That's an odd combination.

you're right, it was an odd combo. I left my bait casters at home and only had the Crappie rigs and a Pflueger ultralight spinning reel on a 6 foot rod in the boat. I saw Bass start chasing minnows near the bank, so I tied on a spinner bait and started casting the bank, but only 'cause I wasn't catching any Crappie at the moment.:D Got the lure about halfway back to the boat and the Gar nailed it. He made a few pretty good runs before he got tired enough for me to get him in the boat. Don't think I would have kept him on if I were using mono, but the power pro braid is some strong stuff and doesn't abrade very easily
