Go on out to Nebraska Furniture Mart and take a pass around the camera display. Talk to one of their folks and tell them what you are wanting.
We were there a few days ago and they had several on sale.
$0.02
(I have a little Nikon Cool Pix, pocket size, takes great pics, eats batteries)

Wal-Mart digital cams
I have a Kodak DX 6490 - a bit pricey but takes fabulous pictures. 10X zoom really pulls things in close. Very happy with it. Got it at Wal-Mart. If it quits, I'll do whatever it takes to duplicate it.
Wal-Mart has a great selection and this is what's on sale right now:
Walmart.com: Electronics: Digital Cameras & Camcorders: Digital Cameras

Depends on which model you want. Personally, I'm a Cannon guy, but our current camera in Panasonic and it is exceptional.
The Cannon in the review is very nice, but the one drawback they mentioned is that it is slower between shots than some others, which you mentioned about avoiding.

Yep,main thing I want is battery life and quick shooting
