Need a little help with fish i.d.

looked on line but couldn't tell from the pics-got the book fishes of mo. by plifger(?),but its in storage.

How to tell difference between a mooneye and goldeye?Have caught 4 in the last 10 years in either the platte,little platte and mo. river-all were over 12 inches and had a mouth full of teeth:D,sharp little suckers!

The easiest way is to look at the ventral keel. It's a sharp edge between the pelvic fin and the tail. While both the mooneye and the goldeye have a fleshy keel on their belly, its position on each fish is different. On the mooneye, the ventral keel does not extend in front of its pelvic fins; on the goldeye, it does.

Hey cook I googled moon eye and they looked like shad to me, and the goggle eye we catch on the river dont look anything like them, is there different kinds of moon eyes?

Yep..mooneyes and goldeyes kinda a shad /herring...ya can get a MDC citation for the mooneye,not the goldeye..so I had to know the difference..and yes,I like to send away for the certificates for different species
