Last year was my 2nd year fishing at Smithville. In ’07 the crappie fishing was great. The spring spawn, I couldn’t do anything wrong. I was catching crappies along the banks and trolling above shallow weed beds. In summer I fished the bridge on the Camp Branch side and some of the timber structures in the main lake area with great results. Fall and winter fishing was good too on the Camp Branch side. Then ’08 threw me for a loop. None of the patterns in ’07 were the same as ’08. The spring swan was not as good at ’07. The Camp Branch side was not as good at the Little Platte arm. The fish were small all year long. And, there was that mysterious black crappie die off that was a bit unexpected. I’m not looking for anyone’s favorite hot spots, but I wanted to find out what experiences you guys had at the lake. I appreciate all the help.
Also, I can’t really find any good article on catfish drifting. If anyone has any suggestions or some web link, I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

welcome from little flat creek sw corner of mo.
Welcome from Truman lake. There is a few guys on here who fish up there. They will help you out. I think Cook fishes for cats also.
Welcome from Joplin. When we drift for cats we usually use fresh shad that we have netted ourselves. Use whole if small or cut them into half or thirds if large shad. Hope this helps.
Welcome from swmo
Welcome from KC...the northland. I fish Smithville but haven't been able to find them consistantly.
welcome from kc also northlander here... brushpiles, brushpile, brushpile
The biggest crappie I ever caught was in the old conservation area up there. I was fishing over one of the old levies. If that area is still open and has enough water you might want to try there.
