I show up friday afternoon at my cabin for deer camp one of highlights of my year. I stopped deer hunting couple years ago as my guys have finally taken my advice on where to go and what to do and have taken plenty of deer enough to take care of their families and several others. My role has shifted to playing host, ketchn crappie for the one big game night meal. Plus strategizing on where to hunt and sharing stories of past successful hunts.
This has been a rough strech of several months where I am having major trouble sleeping and resulting in real trouble breathing plus major leg and overall weakness where I can't really do much. Except go to favorite docks and shorelines and still have been ketchn good numbers/limits of crappie. Just can't go as often.
started out fine friday afternoon with 8 solid fish to start and my son taking over cleaning duties, which is nice. let them get up and go saturday morning but did have tough time sleeping as they played the same old stupid movies too loudly and they stay up late. Went to favorite dock twice both times with guys fishing there for some time and Nada ketch's. they left when I arrived and of course I thought well it was just them but kinda blustery and NOTHING myself.
One of crew killed a nice solid 8 pointer which was great and that is the night of the veggie soup or chili and pie at community center 100 feet away but couldn't walk there so drove and we had great supper and visited with locals.
again boys kept me up even with pill but had their breakfast and were gone when I got up. Ate eggs and B & G then headed to lake. again locals were on the water but complaining of no bites at all and left while I was setting up my gear. Once again ego said don't worry we will whack them but Oh No once again NADA. really strange.
saw one of my crappie guru's fishing on the rocks where he always gets them and so headed over to parking area to find out how he did. He had one last honey hole to finish up his limit and yes he had his 15. took a lot longer than usual but he had his. He saw how slow I was walking and inquired if I had got into them and when I said no He said he knew my job was to provide crappie so he offered hi limit and I gladly took them. Course he didn't want to clean his to give away to someone else so it worked out great.
Nice to have friends who taught you how to ketchm.
I left in afternoon but boys had their crappie and squirrel fest. Took selfies so I could send to my friend and he got a bit kick out of them.
Boys left except my son next morning and he went to dad's usual spot and killed a nice 8 pt buck. then he went home.![]()
