Default Stocking 3” fry in October (Missouri)

My local farm store is selling 3 inch crappie for a dollar on October 12. I know about acclimating to the temperature before a release, but is it too late? Will they survive? (Rural King store)

I know lots of people do that, but I thought I read once that’s it’s actually illegal. Certainly is if they are under size.
