Jake, the answer to your question has depends on how you are fishing. If I am casting a jig to the bank on light line an easy flick will do. In your case you have a long soft tipped rod and you are down 15-20 feet, you need to be more aggressive. Remember that even moving slowly you have some slack you need to take up on the hook set. When I am 2-poling it’s not how hard but how much slack I can take up so in that instance you lift as far as you can and hope they stay on while you put the other rod down and get to the reel. Hope that helps. 60 years of experience doesn’t hurt either.
