Another trip below the dam

Alright fellas. I was trying to do my own research, and I'm certainly going to consult with Jeff next time we go out, but I'm finding conflicting information about how to set the hook.
Since many of us are fishing the same water and I believe using similar methods right now, I feel this thread to be most appropriate.
Several other threads say to jerk em with all you got and other guys say they barely do anything and you'll tear the lips out. One thing is certain, they are all using different methods.
So I've been getting as many bites as Jeff but only landing 1/3 of fish. 2 poling with double jigs - tight lines. How do you hook up? (first time out I was using 6ft bass rods, next time out 9ft crappie rods and less successful.)

quick wrist flick up and you have em. don't miss many so that's what I do.

Now the couple times I've spiderrigged is another story. King richard and Jeff didn't like my technique and missed bunch that way.

Well first and foremost you do not have near the time on the water catching fish with a long pole that Jeff has. What has improved my catching is to use small dia. braid as my mainline on a long pole with a swivel. On to the swivel I tie a 8-10 lb. floro. leader of about 3 ft. that I attach my jigs to. When you get that small tap it is like a flick on your ear no mistake to the bite it is a right now set the hook tap. And a small set with the braid buries the hook.:twocents

Jake, the answer to your question has depends on how you are fishing. If I am casting a jig to the bank on light line an easy flick will do. In your case you have a long soft tipped rod and you are down 15-20 feet, you need to be more aggressive. Remember that even moving slowly you have some slack you need to take up on the hook set. When I am 2-poling it’s not how hard but how much slack I can take up so in that instance you lift as far as you can and hope they stay on while you put the other rod down and get to the reel. Hope that helps. 60 years of experience doesn’t hurt either.

:( no dangit! thats what I been doing (that's what it looked like you were doing too) I was really hoping I was doing something wrong and not the dreaded "practice makes perfect" solution. Well there's much worse things to have to practice...mowing straight lines, painting a house, DRYWALL.... And every fish ya lose makes ya wanna try that much harder.

Curious as to what hook you are using. Switched to sickle hooks little over a year ago, can honestly say VERY rare to miss or not get a good hookup.

Tried sickle hooks a few times and I agree that they get good hookups. My problem is I am so set in my ways that they make me crazy trying to put a jig body on straight. Same thing with a minnow on the bare hook. Just doesn’t look right to me. That takes away the whole confidence thing for me.

I gotta agree Jeff is set in his ways. But they work great for him. He does not like braid much either but I sure like fishing with him. We all have a few particulars. Or is it Peculiars?
