OK I'm confused. Only freshwater drum I ever caught was in Lake Erie and was told they were trash fish not good to eat. Black Drum are good eating but they are saltwater .What are these?
As far as I know they are just drum. That is what they are listed as. The small are good to eat. Big crappie size is best. When they get over 2 lbs. they get fat and can have an off taste. But the smaller ones are fine. I just cut all the red meat out like all fish and fry them up. Hook into a 10 lb fish and they are a blast.
We caught some in Erie fishing for Smallmouth Bass and Walleye. They ran upwards of 5-6# and we thought we had a trophy Smallmouth on the line. Locals said they were not good to eat, besides we were only keeping Walleye to cook. Man were they good out of that cold water.
I had never even seen a freshwater drum. They are the northern version of our Bowfin I guess.
