I really enjoyed pulling cranks last year with rip-a-lip and think that everyone should at least try it. That said, Max, I would recommend that you learn how to use cranks before moving on to planer boards. I understand that rip has gotten good with them now, but if you could have seen us trying them out the first time, you would have been laughing histerically. We got pissed and humiliated!

You don't need the planers to pull cranks, just get some 2 and 300 series bandits and start pulling a few around the creek channels this summer at about 1.8 mph on about 70-150 feet of line. Like most other things in life, you can make trolling as simple or as complicated as you want, but you will catch some fish by doing that and nothing more.
I've got planers and never use them. I catch plenty trolling without them
I tried it twice last year and nothing, it is probably just me tho. I know the fish were there cause I caught some on minners and came back down with cranks. I will try it again this year and see if I can learn something else.
Here's my 2 cents .....learned this from you guys on this board...works pretty good....
4 lines is what I care to "manage" - you have 2 outside lines and 2 inside lines...
Outside lines - I use 2 14 ft rods - bullet weight + swivel + 3-4 leader line + 300 bandit bait of your choosing. Outside line let out about 50 feet or so, no bite, let out more line until you fine the sweet spot.
Inside lines - I use 8 - 12 ft rod - bullet weight + swivel +3 - 4 leader line + 300 bandit bait. Inside line - let out farther than the Outside lines start with maybe 75 feet or so, no bite, let out more line until you fine the sweet spot.
Put the outboard motor in gear, for me, lowest revs possible.....other people may use a "kicker motor" like maybe a 6hp or so.
The different length lines is a method for keep the from being entangled and also , the bandit will ride at slightly different depths.
That's my 2 cents...and it works for me.... I believe I have a "noisy" boat so I will givin the planer boards a try as well.....but I do not think they are necessary in general....

Navy, you are almost certainly correct! I think I'll stick with trying to learn what I'm learning now. Oh and buddy, thank you for your suggestions you gave me in PM. Putting them together with what Satdoc and Torch have helped me out with is turning into more fish. I ain't gonna be no master no time soon, but it's nice to come home with some crappie.
Release, thank you sir for the fine link. Anybody else who wants to know anything about planer boards should definitely check it out. I read around on there for about 30 minutes, and I can to the conclusion that Navy is right on the money! I ain't nowhere ready for all that.

Not saying I'm the best, cause I ain't, but you can learn more in a couple hours with someone that knows how to do it, then you can in a week by yourself...
