braided line

It's been lightly discussed before, but for you guys using braided line, what brand to you like, what lb test, color, etc. seems to work best for ya. Pros/
Cons of braided line. Really considering a swith and I need some expert abvice. Thanks.

Wannabe to the rescue!!!

I've been playing around with it some. One of my primary rods had 15lb power pro in hi vis. Love it for deep water and in the grass. It transmits every vibration. I normally fish 2 rods at a time, one in each hand. My second rod has 6# Suffix Elite. The contrast is very noticable. I actually don't get hung as much with the braid becuase I feel what I'm about to get hung up on way earlier and can back the jig down. Light bites are much easier to detect as well.

There are really only 2 negatives - I tend to get wind whip a bit in that the line will rap the tip as I'm tossing the jig out....Now I'm talking tightlining here, not casting. The other is that if you mess up and toss your jig errantly, it'll stick to a stump or stick pretty easily.

Started out with the non hi-vis stuff, but it was so hard to see, I went to the Hi Vis. Really irks me to think the fish can see it, but so far I can't tell it's costing me fish and I know some in a lot clearer water than ours exclusively use the Hi-Vis stuff. Started out with the hi-vis and a leader of mono, but that was a serious pain. Didn't seem to effect the feel of it though.

Been thinking about going to something from Spider Wire that has alternating Hi-Vis, Low Vis. Can't remember what it's called at the moment...Might be Vicious brand now that I think about it.

FYI, Spiderwire is more stiff than power pro. Seems to have some kind of coating on it. You could put a short piece of it on a table and actually push it along. Not so or Power Pro.

Any other quandries I can unquandry for ya Just let me know, I'm here to help......well, that and fling a little poo.........oh, and to make fun of some folks occassionally.

Atta boy, WB. Knew I could count on ya. You my new hero. Thinkin' about the Suffix '5 metered color' in 10 lb., or the Stren Sonic Braid (lo-vis green) in 10 lb. That should be about the diameter of a 4lb mono, right? Usin' a 10ft med action rod for dabbin. This should work fine, dontcha think?

Will this work good on my open-face as well?

I haven't tried a lot of the braid brands, Power Pro, Spiderwire and Tuff Line is about all I've ever fooled with, but yeah, the 4# diameter usually gives you 15# test equivelant. Wouldn't be scared to try the brands you mentioned, but dang 5 meter markings? Heck, that's better than 15'. What good is that? Don't no Crappie live over 10' deep anyhow and those that do took a wrong turn somehwhere. If the alternating bands is important to you, I'd look for something with 1' markings or maybe 3' .

As far as spinning reels go, I've never had great look with them. Wind knots are the killer and if using it I get one, it's almost impossible to straighten out on the water. If you do that, take a spare with you in case else it could ruin your day if it's the only one you got with you.

Thanks Pard. I'm gonna try the Suffix. I'll get back to you with what I think. Now, I gotta go get my pole lengthened. Not sure if that's gonna be fun or not, I'll get back to you on that also.

braids on calm, open water, are great. In the wind, it'll kill you trying to keep it from wrapping around your rod tip. Another bad thing I hated about them is if your line gets wet, it tends to "stick" to your rod, preventing you from lowering your jig by feeding out more line. It just won't slide through your line guides when it's wet. It's tough line, but has too many shortcomings for the type of fishing I do. I much prefer 6lb. super mono.

Wills, I had forgotten about that downside, but for some reason, the Power Pro Hi-Vis does not stick to the rod when wet. Might be a brand thing. Do get the wind whip on the tip though. Might want to give that a chance if you like the other properties.

I use 4/15 braid with 8# flouro leader. Jwills is right about braid sticking, so I try to find quality poles with about 1 guide/foot. When the Wally Marshall poles went to 13 guides on a 10' pole I quit using them. The old models were better.

I'll give it a try one day. I have so many lines on hand right now to try that it may be a while. I'm giving line away for folks to try.

I use Stren Micro Fuse for Wacky Worm and Frog fishing when I regress to catching Bass, nothing but Mr. Crappie Hi Viz for Crappie.
