Fishing destinations changing ?

I know with the human nature of the masses this is wishful thinking. But if people would just keep what they reasonably need, all the crazy length and pole limits would be unnecessary.
But that would require them to put some effort into enforcing the reasonable rules. I’ve been fishing all my life at Pickwick, and I have NEVER seen or been checked by a MS warden. Only twice in all that time have I been checked, and both by Alabama marine patrol. Mostly for safety equipment, fishing license.
Never wanted to look in cooler or livewell. Don’t really have knowledge now, but those jokers that camped at Rosetrail used to be absolute hogs, especially before and during the spawn. Coolers full taken back to camper, then go back out for more. Spend the next day cleaning fish, then the next two going around giving fish to anybody who would take them.
Like it was their calling in life to try to remove every last one from the lake.
I know of people who do that at Sardis too. I just hope MSG&F just stay heck away from Pickwick and leave it alone. Right now it is whichever state, TN and Al whose evers limits are more liberal. Hope that never changes and keeps the buffoons in Jackon at bay.

Some enforcement is neccessary unfortunately. No honor system left any more. I remember a day I pulled out of holiday lodge on Sardis. There were two warden's, one consoling two young boys probably 8 to 10 years old. The other had the dad cornered and letting him no he was in big trouble and didn't appreciate being put in the situation with being bad guys in front of those two kids. Guy had 72 fish not one over 11 inches. So he was not only 32 fish over a boat limit he had all short fish. Anyway guess that's a different topic. I agree, if fisherman just took what they actually needed it would be a better world. Now thanks to social media everyone needs those glamour shots! Get their name in the paper and all, resources be dam..

I did a little looking online at the limits of our neighboring states along with ours.
Crappie (black and white combination)
TN 10" 15
AL 9" 30
AR 30
MS 30, I thought it was 10".
There is a state wide limit for us, where and what is it? I sent an email pointing it out.
A warden can say there's a size limit if fish the Tassahatchie river at New Albany, it is part of Sardis lake.
Fish below the dam at Pickwick, you are fishing in KY lake.

The MDWFP app also has a link to the creel limits (although one ends up going to fishing report first and then get the link for limits), although I also have a bookmark on my phone to that link. I try to go paperless when possible because they get damaged or info gets out of date (considered an uncontrolled document in my line of work), so I go electronic as much as possible. I usually have my phone when on the boat, so this works for me while it may not be best for others.

Everywhere I fish there is no length limit. There is lots of Herbicides being dispensed into the waters I fish. Interesting thing is since all the Herbicide Spraying showed up in reduced vegetation visibly you rarely get close to a limit. I think there is a connection. If Management is killing the resources for the Crappie to multiply who's worried about limits a Angler may catch after the fact. Thousands of Acres of Watershed is being sprayed, not Land Locked Impoundments.

Social media plays a big part in where people fish. Guides post limits on the lake and everyone want to go there. Post big fish everyone goes there. I see lots of posts from guides for Grenada and Enid very few for Sardis, Ross Barnett, and Arklabutler. Even the fishing reports are very general in nature for most part expect maybe for the reservoirs. Used to see better details on lakes like Washington, Fergusson, Whittington and such (local to me). I don’t even social media posts for these. Lake I grew up on is a “dead” lake now since carp have invaded and really declined after the 2011 flood. I used to be busy and full of pleasure boats and fishermen. All the property is abandoned ramps over grown docks falling in. Sad sad.

I wish they would bring a little of that spray up to bay springs! It’s getting so choked out you can hardly fish for it in the spring.

As far as I know, yes Sir. I think it goes for Pickwick too? I hold em up and look, ask them do you need to grow some more? My eyeball is calibrated to around 10 1/2 inch, so I never measure one. Well, except out of curiosity when I’m cleaning, my fish cleaning table has measurements molded in on the front and it has born out my calibration [emoji6]
Seems like the lake has changed a lot over the last few years. Back in my heyday there, it was full of wolf packs of big whites roaming open water. A local clued me in to one of the few crankbaits that could reach them in the summer. By midday you needed to be down around 20-21 feet. But it seems like the blacks are getting more prominent, and they stick tighter to cover. I honestly don’t care to eat them as well, something about the texture just isn’t right. Mealy or something.

Speaking only for myself, as an out of stater, I catch all the fish I can eat from my home waters. If I made a trip south to fish the big 3 I would be thrilled to catch 100 11" fish in a day and one monster. I'm not in it to bring home a freezer full of fish. I also wouldn't be fishing in 100* heat, y'all are crazy :biggrin. About 75* is where I start rendering lard!
