It's been ages ago, but I used to bank fish about a 50 acre pond/lake that had small numbers of big crappie that would hang around stumps in 4 to 6 feet of water. A 1/8 oz. Cotton Cordell Big-O in shad color was the best thing I found to catch them on. I would cast on 4 lb. test and could usually catch a few.
I cast cranks for crappie with success. I've caught them on small lipless and squarebill cranks with a 6'6 rod with 8 pond line with a spinning reel and can cast quite far and accurately and has more than enough power to rip the crank and or fish out of some brush.
