I think I need to explain what I was asking better. The smell I was referring was not something I picked up in the air, like a bream bed or even crappie spawn. It's too early for that. I did not notice this odor until I caught a big pre-spawn female and had it in my lap. The odor hit me, and it's the same smell as when they are concentrated and spawning. Shirked it off as a fluke until I caught another and then a 3rd with the same odor. I'm guessing the females put off a pheromone when nearing spawn time. We start smelling it above water when they are highly concentrated and in the shallows.

I understand what your saying and hadn’t ever payed much attention to individual fish smelling like that but I did smell them yesterday in a couple places in shallow water . Like I smell them every year but I can’t never Seam to locate em .:dono
