In there where that bridge is it would have cost millions to do so. Lot of water flows under that thing in big rains, have seen water up to the bridge back in the early 80s, bridge on 55 was closed due to being flooded.

Don, don't get you're hopes up to high. Hwy 51 and I-55 are up stream from Butla reservoir. First bridge below Butla is at Prichard, many miles from the dam and is in good shape.
Slit filling into these lakes over the years and now we are having problems with flooding. These reservoirs were built during the '50 and can't hold the amount of water as they use could. The COE needs to dredge the lakes and put the silt into holding areas. Offer free dirt to anyone that wants it, just bring your loading equipment and get all you want.
Look at Sardis, upper lake at the outlet tower. There is a set of steps from the top of the dam downward into the water. Upper lake beach is somewhere down there. I saw it 2 years when I was a kid. That was back when you could drive hwy 315 below the dam or take the lake front drive from the spillway back across the campgrounds to 315 where the road cut on the north side to the top of the dam. The state park roped their side off north of the boat ramp first and blocked entrance to the grounds on the north side of 315. Yep, camped a few times on the COE campgrounds at the ramp with a 5 year old. Could pull trailer to the ramp and get boat without going on the highway.
