After our Grenada trip, the wife held my nose pretty tight to the grindstone on that dadgum honey-do list, haha. Managed to sneak out for a quick final trip before I head back to my ship. Pulled cranks from 6am-9am. I had a lot of short strikes, probably 12 or more knockdowns that didn't stick. I ended up putting eight crappie in the boat along with a few whisker-fish. Nothing to brag about size wise. They all ran about 10-12" or so. Had one nice slab spit the hooks at the boat. 4-6' deep in 25-30 foot of water. Arkie 220 in ghost craw was the popular one. All fish were released for another day.
Question for you veteran crankbaiters: what do you do when they are short striking?

Wow! Nice crappie.
Be safe and good luck fishing
Either that fish is smaller or your hands have grown exponentially larger since you left Grenada![]()
At least up here on the twin lakes, they seem to short strike for a period in the summer, then go back to hammering them. We had our short strike period back late last month. Noticed Saturday morning that we were having a few hits and then they shook loose but that seems common. I am still learning the cranking thing, but we have fell in love with the technique and really enjoy it.

Interesting! That's good to hear. I am a neophyte still. This was maybe my third time pulling cranks out of my boat. I have seen them short strike here and there the other times but not to the magnitude that they were this time. Still fun watching those PST's load up the way they do!

Do you speed up? Or just play with the speed until they start to stick better?

It's tough to say. I still haven't learned what a ruler is on Barnett.
