When fishing deeper than my rod length I drop the bait to the bottom and then crank up a turn or two or three or four. This is super easy to duplicate, works best if all the reels have the same gear ratio and same models but doesnt have to be, just looking for a reference.
Thanks for all the replies and methods
I set the line to the end of my pole which is 14' then I just pull line off the reel two foot at a time and go 16, 18 and so on.

I put a string bobber stop on the line......I just slide the stop up and down the line based on measurements using your length of reach. Your height is equivalent to distance between your outstretched arms, from fingertip to center of chest half that, elbow to hand....and so on. You can change your depth from deeper to shallow or vice versa with out even giving it much thought...hold the stop knot right at the water line you know what you have under it. I like the Thill brand bright yellow Thill Premium Bobber Stops | Bass Pro Shops: The Best Hunting, Fishing, Camping & Outdoor Gear
