I've got a 99 model Yamaha 115 hp motor it will go in forward but won't go in reverse can anybody tell what's wrong with it

Did you just put in a water pump?

That's whats wrong then....he put it back together with the shift linkage not in the same position.....your going to have to drop the foot again.....put the foot in neutral and put your shift in neutral.....and put back together

Yhep the linkage is off. I went to back up with the 115 hp I had and hit something under the water hard enough to kill the engine. It would go great in forward but when you tried to put it in reverse the gears would just make a grinding sound. Turned out it was just the cable adjustment.

Yeah I bought it from my granddad he had put a new water pump on it by himself he can work on that smaller stuff by himself but them big motor are a lil too much for him and he can't fish anymore so I got a great deal on it I think other than that linkage problem that's all that's wrong with it and that sounds pretty simple to fix
