Winni is one of those lakes where you almost have to live right next to it to know where action is happening, but if you don't live there the timing for your trip is certainly going to be an asset.

Crappies will most likely be weed related. Most days with look for them on the outside edges near the deer water. Deep cold fronts can bury them in the weeds so fishing the weed tops and down into the weeds will find them. At this time of year, crappies are going to be food oriented big time and will show multiple peak feeding periods in a 24 hour day. Early morning and late afternoon, the periods with long shadows, might be better production periods.

Look for walleyes in bays as well as on main lake structure. I'd look for sunken rock humps. Having weeds atop of the humps would be a bonus. Jigs and shiner minnows fished vertically would be my first choice, but trolling a spinner rig with a shiner might still be effective as can be trolling a crankbait. Myself I lean towards the jig minnow combination being worked just off the breakline of the rock humps. The rock doesn't have to be super deep at the top, but I'd like some deeper water along and around the edges. 1/4 ounce jigs will be the mainstay for size.

I haven't heard much regarding Cass. Winnie info comes from a local who is a good friend, one who fishes it on a regular basis.

This time of year check out The Cutfoot Sioux area for Crappie. Nice weedlines and sharp drop off areas to choose from. Walleye could be about anywhere. Some reports on different sites have the Walleye transitioning shallow on North Side of main lake and also check Highbanks area
