Dock Shooting

Took the wife and grandson to Tims yesterday to fish a little and was shooting a few docks and the tip broke off my favorite light weight spinning rod. Is this a normal thing from dock shooting, it was not a cheap rod. Do I need to buy some cheap rods to keep the cost down from this or was this just a fluke, how often do you guys break rods dock shooting? I only ended up with one keeper at 11 inches.

if you hit anything with the end of rod when shooting IT WILL BREAK......might have been weak for a while and just gave up then...I shoot with an all-star and g=loomis and have broken other rod but it was always from hitting something with the tip while shooting...... best advise I can give is to stay about 10-15 feet from the dock and you will save rods.....

I don't think I hit anything, it just broke abought an inch off. If I don't get it fixed before the next meeting I'll bring it. thanks

For that little bit you might be able to heat and remove the old tip and use 2 part epoxy for the repair. Any weak spot will give up when they get stressed like we do to em. I was once told that the newer high modulus graphite rods aren't designed to bend more than 90 degrees. I bend some of mine past that but I don't use much high end stuff. Sorry you didn't get any more fish, but I'm sure it was good being out.

Yes it was good to get out, even though I only caught 1 crappie I did catch a few smallies and 1 largemouth also. I thought about heating the tip up to see if I could get it out just haven't got around to it yet.

I haven't broken any tips yet, but I usually don't that close to docks to hit anything with the tips either (poor boat control ??). I've loaded my rod tips pretty good at times, and I don't have any "expensive" rods, just the $20-30 ones.

I never have broken one. I use a St. Croix light aciton and it does very well.

Just put a new tip on it, you will probabably like it better for shooting afterwards.

I haven't broken one either. Granted I don't pull it to where I consider it a breaking point either. I use rods that aren't considered expensive and have had good luck.
