Todays trip was to Sessions Lake, a small, no wake lake in the Ionia State Game Area. Jeff and I got there about 7:30 am and the weather was a bit on the cool side with a light wind and some fog hanging around. We started long lining 1/16 oz jigs and plastics as soon as we left the dock.
I took a half hour or so to find a stretch of shoreline that was holding some crappie, and from there on it was all about dialing it in. The fish we found weren't huge, 9 1/2-10 1/2, but were good, quality fish for this lake. They were hanging in 8'-12' of water on the outside edge of the shallow weed beds. We played with different colors and found the Cabelas paddle tail in firecracker and Bobby Garland baby shad in opening night to be two of the most productive colors.
Michelle came over mid morning to take a ride in the Ole' Gray Beard and to bring us donuts. We managed a few more crappie on a different stretch of shoreline before the wind got to be too much to longline in. We anchored up in a few different spots, throwing the same jigs and plastics and played C&R . When we decided to quit in the early afternoon, we had 18 crappie and 3 bluegills, the biggest 9".
Today was mainly another shake down run for the Louisiana boat and we found a few changes we need to make. Despite the wind, the weather was beautiful and the fish cooperated with us. All in all, it was an awesome day on the water.
