Ice fishing report, January 12-14
What a weekend. The wind made everything tough, walking, driving, and fishing.
Higgins lake had good ice all over, still, be careful venturing out deep. With the warm up, the ice was crystal clear. In shallow water, liytle fish could be easily seen. Fishing was good in the morning with people catching smelt, a few dink perch and a laker here and there.
My group did not fair so well. We fished 80 fow and 50 fow, skunked. 4 tip ups set up and four fishermen jigging. No luck. Think I need to invest in some ice electronics.
Houghton lake was a different story, set up near 7 fow on a shallow shelf. Set up one tip up and only a foot of line went down the hole. Thought maybe I was caught up on something, pulled up and a 17 inch walleye had gobbled up the bait inches from the hole!
Three more fish came out of the ice. Two northerns (23 inches and the other 22 inches) and a 10 inch crappie.
The wind was brutal and couldn't spend much time out of the shanty wandering and drilling holes.
