Jeff and I opted to try a different lake today. We drove an hour east and fished Poverty Point, home of the 3lb crappie. This is a 2700 acre lake that is mostly 10' or less and has a few canals with 25'+ of depth. These canals are what we fished, slow trolling a set up with a 1/16 oz jig on the bottom and a #2 sickle 18" up with a 1/4 oz weight between. The jig was baited with a pink/white tube and the sickle hook with a shiner. We got on the water at daylight and within 15 minutes had our first crappie in the boat. They bit pretty good for the first hour and then the goo ( fresh water drum ) moved in. Now catching crappie is fun but trying to land a goo in the 22"-24" range on a 12' crappie jig pole is a blast. By 11 everything quit biting and we were off the water by 1 pm. We got 6 crappie with the biggest at 1lb 10oz and another at 1-6. the other 4 were 3/4 lb+. We also caught 10-15 goo and some bar fish. I'm not camera shy so here's my fish.![]()
