Default Saturday trip to Morrison Lake, Ionia County

Haven't had the opportunity to fish with my buddy Jeff for over a month so when he told me he had the weekend free I knew we would be able to hit the water together. We decided on Morrison mainly because it's close but also because there was a chance to catch gills, specks and perch. We launched around 830 am and headed to an area where we have done good in the past. While I was rigging up Jeff stuck a red worm on a teardrop and flipped his bobber into shallow water. Within seconds he had the first hit, but failed to hook up. By the time I had my #10 gold aberdeen baited and ready, he was reeling in to rebait." Dinks "we both figured. My bait had barely hit the water and the bobber dipped. The first fish of the day was a chunky 7 1/2" gill. We worked the shoreline and around the docks, mostly in 3-5 fow and managed to catch fish every place we tried. We battled the wind at times and had to deal with green snotty weeds as well as some jet skiers but still managed to scratch out a limit of gills with the smallest we kept 7 1/2" and the biggest right at 9". Most were 1/4" either side of 8. Never got a chance to try for specks or perch but we're not complaining. Water temp was 60 and the females we cleaned had small, loose egg sacs. I'm thinking that with normal weather, we're about 3 weeks away from finding them on the beds, at least in this part of the state.

Thanks for the report Spartannation. Congrats on a bunch of nice gills. I'm a little worried about the green snotty weeds already. Remember two or three summers ago when that lake was just a thick green soup of algae? Must have been a lot of fertilizer nutrients coming in off the farmland or golf course. Probably like Lake Erie down by Toledo. I think we still caught some fish that year, but boy I don't know how they survived in that.
