Detroit River report rainy day walleye
Headed to the D with a couple of buddies today. This was my first chance to get down there and the weather reports of drizzly rain and light winds were what we were hoping for. Launched out of Elizabeth a little before 7 am and were fishing by 7:30. Minutes into our first drift we stuck our first fish, I wasn't even down yet. Two more in the next 10 minutes were a sign of how the day would shape up. At the start of our 2nd drift I finally stuck a dandy. Got her almost to the surface and the jig popped free. This is the way the morning went as we picked up 1-3 fish a drift and missed a few short strikes. No consistency to how they were biting, one would about jerk the rod out of your hand and the next would be a slight tick. We netted 10 fish and lost two, all being 20-23 inches and coming from 11 to 16 fow. About 10:30 the bite had slowed so we moved to a new location hoping to put the final 5 fish in the box. On the first drift Capt. Billy stuck 3 walleye faster than I've ever seen, I'm guessing under 3 minutes! We picked up another 8 fish with 3 being unders and 3 being upgrades and left the river about 12:30 with a 3 man limit. The final batch were taken in 26-28 fow. Billy also caught a smally and a 3" musky minnow. We were using 3/4 oz chartreuse jigs with Wyondotte style worms in green pumpkin, brown, blue ice and albino. Fished the lower river, never going north of Elizabeth. We talked to some guys that said they were getting good fish in the rocks by the new fishing pier but we didn't fish there so it might just be a rumor. Water temp started at 46 and was at 50 when we left. Also heard the white bass were starting to show up, again could be a rumor. Got one quick pic before cleaning them showing my
crappie pose.
