Look up the desired crank in the precision trolling book or get the app. it will tell you how many feet back from the board you need to be to get to the depth you desire.

I prefer the in line boards. For me, I don't like the mast system because of all the shuffling you have to do with your lines when you hit a fish.
If I'm running three boards on one side and the middle one has a fish, i can reset it right back to the middle.
On my inside boards, I run red clips front and back so the don't release. On my outside boards, I run a red in the back so it doesn't come off and an orange up front so I can trip the board.
I also prefer mono line as it won't slip through the pads on the release. I use Berkley 10lb XT. I use it for steelhead on my hotshot rigs too. Same rods as well. I use 7.5 and 8.5 angler series planerboard rods from gander mountain
