Weekend report
I have been busy touring the great State of Michigan and exploring as many fishing opportunities as I possibly can do.
The Detroit river is still giving up limit catches of walleye. These are the smaller eater size fish. Most of them can be found in the upper stretches of the river from the mouth in St. Clair to the Ambassador bridge. Deeper is better. Try 30 to 50 feet.
Lake Erie is giving up nice catches of Walleye. The females are all done with their business and are busy putting on the feed bags. I suggest shallow water (11 feet).
Haven't been to Saginaw so I cannot comment other than I would be willing the bet the traffic is hectic (especially the river) as the walleye opener was Saturday.
I've been busy perch fishing. I fished Muskegon Lake on Friday and managed a nice haul of 31. I was unable to get wigglers however so minnows had to do. I watched one guy boat hundreds of fish. I asked where he got his wigglers and he told me the location. I made sure to pick up 100 on my way home.
Fished it again yesterday. The breeze was up in the morning but there was not much in the way of waves. Water was just moving fast. We ended up keeping 56 fish with two over 12 inches. I commented to my dad that some guys need a lesson in reading their electronics. Not many people fishing and the ones that were seemed to want to fish out of my boat. The pods of fish where all over the place. You just have to find an active pod. My tactic was to use the trolling motor into the wind and slow troll until we found a fish and then use spot lock to stay on top of them, when they were done, we moved on. I also back drifted with the wind and used the trolling motor set slower than the wind to keep the bow straight.
For Muskegon, fish the sand docks (leading to the channel to Lake Michigan). There is a house to the south of the channel. Line yourself up with the American flag and the Industrial smoke stack across the lake. Start in 37 feet and work out to 46 feet.
I also had a reliable report from perch fishing out of Grand Haven as well as White Lake. Fish both sides of the lake where the channel starts.
For us, pinky flies in Chartreuse and lime green were the hot color with a 1oz pyramid sinker.
