Took the new/used tournament boat out yesterday in the Detroit river. Launched around 6:45am and headed North to Wyandotte.
Fished a shelf in 20 ft of water. Boated 12 walleyes and released three big females (11, 12, and 13 lbs). Kept 9 fish.
My dad had the hot hand yesterday fishing with one of my custom baits. 3/4 oz pearl jig head, sickle hook, and pink worm. I used a hot pink jig and a Berkley white and pink 4 in minnow. My buddy and tournament partner didn't have the luck. A couple things dawned on me. One, I install prism eyes on all of my jigs. My buddy didn't want any on his jigs. Might have made a difference. Also, visibility was clear and he uses braided line. My dad and I both use 6 lb mono. I have heard that guys use braid for better water resistance for verticle jigging. Funny thing is most braids give you that strength but the diameter is that of 6lb test. You don't need the strength. Sometimes proof is in the livewell!
I am always amazed when you talk to others. One person will always say.. "no fish are biting yet"... others will say "all our fish came on dark colors... they wouldn't bite on light colors".
I do however love to see the look on peoples faces when I pull a fish out of the water, remove the jig, and slide her back in the water. I always say "go back and make babies". Maybe one or two will take note and do the same thing. Three master angler fish went back in the water yesterday! That is a good day in my book.

I'm going to the Detroit river tomorrow.
Went again today. Caught 7, let one big girl go.
Took a newbie. He lost two but finally caught one. Females were squirting eggs and males were milking. Two days and the temp went up over 4 degrees. Tons and tons of boats.
Got to see 7 huge ones in the launch in the boat next to ours while packing the stuff today. The guy probably won the tourney. Guess there is always next time..
Left my house yesterday morning on a solo trip to the river. I figured with the temperature change from the night before that the fish would really be active and on the feed. Boy was I right!
Started fishing at 6:50am. I had my 5 fish limit by 7:45am. I released one female at 10lbs 2oz.
All females were spawned out. All males were milked out. Reports from yesterday (after I left) was that it was the single best day on the river in nearly 20 years.
Everyone knows the old "you should have been here yesterday"? Well, I was!! And I'll be there tomorrow too!
