Went after some crappies this morning. The lake I usually fish I very clean and with the weather calling for clear skies I decided on a plan that called for pre-dawn fishing until around 7:30 AM. The last time I went to this spot was a week ago, the weather was partly cloudy with a chance of T-Storms and the crappies were active and chasing down small jigs and plastics. Today however, things were a bit tougher. The fish were not hanging out in front of the feeder creek like last week. Up until 7AMish, I had only caught one keeper slab and it took the bait on the fall; nothing was hitting bait moving horizontally through the water except small gills. I wanted to be out of the water by 7:30 so about 7:15 I decided it would not hurt to move 30 or 40 feet down the shore from the inlet to a minor (and I mean minor) inside bend in the pad lined shore. A few casts with my jig and gulp minnow yielded nothing, but on my last cast I let the jig hang motionless , 4 or 5 feet under the surface for a few seconds, and that is when I got a little tick on the line. I raise the rod tip and hauled in a nice slab. I unhooked him and tossed the jig back into the water and started getting my catch on the stringer. Next thing I know my rod tip is going nutz so I drop the crappie in my hand onto the bottom of the boat and land my 2nd crappie. He was kind enough to unhood himself and join his friend in the bottom of the kayak.
I decided to try for three in a row and tossed the jig back in. It was not long before I was three for three. I guess it pays to not get hung up on one spot or technique, especially after a cold front. Got some video of the day below.
