1993 Yamaha 90 HP Motor Question

Hey guys. I bought my first boat last night. It came with a 1993 Yamaha 90 HP Motor. It says precision blend on the motor if that means anything. My question is, below I attached a picture of what I believe is the oiler. He said "he plugged the lines and it recirulates back into the resivior to prevent losing a motor because the oiler goes out on you". At the time I didn't think anything of this as I don't know anything about boats yet. I just wanted to see what this sounded like to any of you. It is a 2 stroke motor from what I can tell. He said to mix oil in with the gas. I'm considering having the motor gone through and looked at/serviced if needed, but don't want to spend the money if it isn't neccessary. I did hear it run with the pair of "earmuffs" he had and gave me for it for the hose to attach to. It seemed to run very nice and strong. He said he had to replace the powerhead or powerpack (whichever is correct term) about a year ago, but other than that he's had no problems with it. He gave me the old one to have/proof it's been done.

What he has done is bypassed the automatic oiler system. It came with that oil tank and hoses attached to the motor. You filled the tank with oil and tank with gas. As the motor runs it automatically adds the right amount of oil to the fuel to lubricate the engine. 2 stroke motors have to have oil mixed with gas to lubricate internal parts. A lot of people have had pump failures that caused engine failures. That's the reason he bypassed the system. All that saiid you need to mix oil with gas at the proper ratio to keep your motor lubed properly. I bought a tube from BassPro that has graduations on the side for different mix ratios. I kept it in the old boat along with oil. I put 4 gal's of gas in I could measure the exact amount of oil for a 50-1 mix, which I ran in that motor. You also need to find out what the right ratio is for that motor.
The one thing oilers do when working properly is adjust the ratio of oil delivered at different RPM's, less at idle more wide open.

Might be worth your time to investigate on the net about how many pump failures Yamaha had. I know some motors were worse than others. Never heard much about the Yamaha's failing.

Thank you for the reply. That is exactly how you explained it to me now that you say that. He said the engine is a 50-1 mix as well and has always used quicksilver 2 stroke oil. I picked up a gallon and a pint today (just for the smaller bottle). That really puts me as ease some hearing that. I'd be ok with the oiler doing it's job as long as it wasn't risky. I'll see what I can find on the net. Thanks again for the reply.
