Help with my 40hp mercury outboard motor

My short shaft that holds the propellar is bent. It is a 2006 4 stroke. My question is how hard is it to take the foot off and change it my self. is their special tools that i need and do i have to undo any thing at the top of the motor and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just guessing, but I'm thinking the lower unit will have a lock ring behind the prop that likely has left-handed threads and really needs a spanner wrench to remove it. then you just pull ou the bearing carrier once the lock ring is off. The shaft is totally easy to change. Those shafts can be straightened a lot cheaper than they can be purchased new but you'll have to look on the net to find someone who does it. Then again, I've never worked on one that is as new as yours.

I looked at what was involved in changing ALL of the seals and soft parts in my 150 and it took me about 3 seconds to decide to have a pro do the work. Probably not that hard but wanted to keep Murphy(Murphy's law) out of the picture. Pro's should know to look for side effects of the obvious damage. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Mat,
Sorry to hear about your motor. Buddy's Marine here in Lexington has done work for me and several friends as well. He has always been fair with charges and good with repair. He is on the right side of 378 coming from your place, just before you get to Dooleys Sport Shop.
Better get it running soon, the perch and crappie are moving into the creeks at your end of the lake.
