Motor not "peeing"

Sorry dont know the technicial term for "peeing" but my 1996 EVinrude 50hp wont pee at idle and the over heating alarm comes on. however once i give it some gas everything is fine.
would it be a water pump or just the impeller or something else? also would it be something that the average mechanically knowledged person be able to do?

Its time to replace the impeller. They should be replaced every couple years. Its not a hard job but I would recommend you get a manual if you haven't done it before.

A 96 model.....when was the impellor replaced last? I change mine every two years just to be on the safe side.

It's PAST time to replace the impeller. If it's peeing at higher speed, the ends on the impeller have probably dry rotted, and/or broken off. You will need to find those fins if you can. They will lodge in the water jacket, or head, and cause major problems for you. If you replace the impeller and it pees right, but still gets hot, you'll need a mechanic. Those fins melt inside the water jacket or head, when the motor gets hot, and stop up the water flow to the head. You might find some of them stuck around the thermostat.

thanks for the info guys. just bought the motor and took her for a test run this weekend. i might just take it into the shop and have them check everything else over, instead of trying to do it myself.

My 60hp Merc will act clogged every now and then. Even with a new impellar, I keep a wire handy about 8" long and lightly stick it into the hole to unclog it. Every time I do this, the flow of the water gets better. I've also got a friend that had his impellar changed by a mechanic and he says the mechanic installed it backwards. His motor seized up on him and he had to purchase another motor. Is it possible to install an impellar the wrong direction?

If the "pee" stream sputters at idle but does good at running speeds thats a sure sign that some of your impellar fins are broken or missing.

Reaper, the fins have to lay in a position that has them swept behind as it spins forward. When you install a new one you grease the impeller and housing and twist it in the proper direction to have the fins fall into place. The housing is D shaped. The fins on the new impeller are straight out from the center giving no indication of how it needs to go in. Before you remove the old one, assuming there's enough of it left to give any indication of it's direction of rotation, I always draw a little pic to remind of which way that is. If it is rotated the wrong direction it can break the fins by forcing it backwards and cause lots of other headaches. The impeller allows water into the space between the fins and when it reaches the flat part of the D, that area is reduced and the water looks for somewhere to go, which is uphill to the power head. Simple concept, and once you do one the rest are easy. An exploded view or manual is a big help. That 50 of yours is a tough motor, worth the bucks for a shop manual.
