    Question Need Advice

My dad just gave me our old 6hp Johnson Seahorse motor for my boat. It is a 67. I have used the motor the past 15 years and I know it has not been abused and was running great last spring and summer after being serviced. It sat fall and winter; dad tried it in Feb. and it ran badly. It sat till last week and I finally got out to try it and couldn't get it to start. Non-ethanol fuel with a fuel stabilizer was used last year and in Feb. of this year and all fuel was ran out of motor.

When I took it out Sat. gas was leaking out the side of the motor from inside the cowling. I popped the cowling and could see fuel dripping out of the side of the square, black, plastic piece that the fuel line runs into. This piece is on the side of the carb. I am not really familiar with working on carbs or these motors, but my guess is that black piece is a fuel filter of some sort.

Is it a bad idea to take that apart and try to clean it or see if I can unclog it? My thought is that the filter may be old or gunked up and not allowing fuel into the carb. I am scared to open it up at all for fear I will just mess something up worse. Anyone familiar with this feel free to offer suggestions.

I really want to use the motor the next few weeks but I cannot afford to take it to be serviced right now. So, if it isn't something I can resolve with my very little knowledge, I will be waiting to use the motor until later this summer I guess. Thanks for any info you can provide.
no matter what I'm doing, I've got hunting or fishing on my mind...

Unless I miss my guess, the square is the fuel pump. I found good prices for parts at seilermarine.com and you should be able to find directions on google how to replace it. Even taken to a pro it shouldn't be all that expensive, but keep in mind that shop labor is pretty high and the job might bring 2 hrs or so. You can get lots of good info on Iboats.com also.

ht, that may be just a dried up gasket. can you tighten it up any? or if it's easy to take off you can see if the gasket is bad. if the motor runs at all i would get a can of the spray seafoam that walmart carries and after you get the leak fixed spray some seafoam into the carb and see if it won't clean the carb for you. a mechanic down in ark said to get or make a tank to hold a gallon of gas and pour in a can of seafoam and run it through to clean the carb and jets. evidently he's a well thought of mech because he is well talked about in that area.
