Gas for my motor?

I just bought a 1986 25 hp outboard motor and i was wondering since i have never owned an outboard before is there a certain kind of gas i should put in it? should i put the plus in it or just un leaded?

you are probably going to get various answers. i have an '86 motor and i've always used regular gas in it but be sure to ad 50 to 1 ratio outboard oil to the gas and i always add the blue stabil and i also add some seafoam to each tank even though i get my gas where they say there's no ethanol in it. i don't take any chances. get gas, if you can find it that says no ethanol added. and there's a couple of threads that says using seafoam is not good or wrong. if so i've been doing it wrong for some years now. make sure the tank is clean inside and you should probably start off with a new epa approved gas line between the tank and motor.

To add to what olduckhunter said which is good. Have the internal gas lines switched to ethanol approved as well as the external lines. A new can will keep you from having non ethanol deposits disssolved by ethanol and getting into your carbs. A fuel filter/water seperator is a must, as well as seafoam in my opinion. I am running a 1986 merc 25 and use regular 10%ethanol blend as I do not want to have to worry about mixing fuel types. With the filters, sea foam, and new lines I have zero issues with fuel. And just unleaded is fine and mix the oil in and go heavy on the sea foam.

Check on the manufactors web site to see what you can use. Was doing some looking on the Tohatsu web site and they reccomend 87 oct or higher in the 25 hp motor. Mercury, Nissan in the smaller hp are made by Tohatsu.

Thanks guys i will try and get some of that stuff. I found a fuel filter at Walmart r for like 16 bucks you guys think i should put that on?

I run merc quicksilver 2stroke oil in all my boats, weedeater, and chainsaw. In the weedeater and chainsaw, it seems to have reduced plug fouling considerably, and they seem to be much easier to start, especially after storage, since switching from cheap oil to quicksilver. Could just by coincidence, but I'm now a believer in using premium oil. I can't tell any difference in running 87 vs 89 octane. The best thing you can do for your fuel is to run your motor often, and keep fuel fresh.

Drum master is correct to the better oil and fresh fuel. I have always ran 89 octane but the manual says 87. If it runs on gas (what ever it is) I add one ounce of sea foam per gallon and I measure it, never guess. I had my mechanic change the head gaskets, there was nothing wrong just 10 years old. He could not believe how good the motor looked. The cylinders and pistons heads were shiny clean and the cylinder walls looked brand new. IF sea foam is wrong I will keep doing it wrong. E10 is the most ethanol you should use NEVER E15. E15 will void any manufacture warranty. If you can get pure gas use it. All we can get is the e10.
The fuel filter would probably be fine if it is a 10 micron filter.

I would also stay away from the low bob hi discount type fuel stations, they refine the oil grades the others wont use.. Stay with marathon or shell, bp.
