I have a Mariner 150 and you have to talk real loud to hear over it when up and running, much louder than my friends Evinrude. It kinda sounds like a hot rod. Nature of the beast. They're louder yet when they're modified. Hear em 'fore you see em.

With the motor down in normal running position, look at the anti cavitation plate. It should be even with the bottom of the boat. Sometimes instead of adding a jack plate people will raise the motor to get more speed. That gets part of the exhaust out of the water making it sound louder.
