Something sounds fishy. No reputable mechanic should be offended because someone wanted to know exactly what was wrong. Do a compression check yourself before you go any further. Its easy to do.

I got the bad news about my 175hp Johnson on a 2000 stratos f/ski boat the other day. The local mechanic said that there was no compression on #3. I am no mechanic by any means and am looking for some answers or possible ideas for replacing or getting this fixed. He estimated around $5000 to rebuild. I talked to him again today and he was steamin about me asking him again exactly what the problem was, like I was insulting him, which I was just trying to get info to pass on to people who may have solutions. Long story short, Im stuck without a motor and am looking for either a used or new motor and if this estimate sounds fair? I don't think I will have it rebuilt and was wondering do people trade these nonworking engines for a new or used one? Any dealers in Central IL? Any answers or ideas, solution are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sean

I think he is trying to get into your back pocket. One of our other members on here had the same thing happen to he's OMC V4 and I helped he get it rebuild. Only cost him around $1500.00 for all 4 holes with new pistons. Can't see a V6 being that much more.
Check out these guys here. Riverside Marine Remanufacturing Inc. | Boat Engine Repair & Service They do good work. Anyone should be able to do a powerhead swap. Send me a PM or email if I can help.

My bro-in-law has a 225 Johnson Ocean Runner on his 23' Sea Craft. He blew it up a couple of months ago. It actually threw a rod thru the block and scoured another pistol.
He bought a used powerhead for $900.00 and put new rings in it for $400.00.
It was going to cost him $3000.00 for a mechanic to do it plus the powerhead. He spent $1300.00 and did the work himself. Saved himself a bunch.
Sounds like someone is trying to take you on a ride you don't want to go on.

Check out southwest marine for a powerhead they offer a 15 month warrenty.

I know a guy who recently had his completely rebuilt, cost $3500.00. 5 grand seems a little high to me. And if the dude get's pissed because I'm asking him questions, then I wouldn't want him to be fixing my motor anyhow.
post the name of shop i will know not to go there:D
5K is WAY too much. If the other cylinders are good...you only need 1 piston, and 1 cylinder bored. Outboards arent like car engines where every cylinder bore needs to be the same, you can reapair just the affected cyl. +1 on all comments bout him acting pissed.... I would get my boat and leave.
P.S. Replacement OEM parts costs EXACTLY the same no matter which dealer you buy em from. They all have MSRP that they sell em for..so go get em elsewhere.
