    Default Boat Trailer Winch

    Hello,

Its time to replace my trailer winch. I have a 17" alum bass boat with a 50 HP motor. I think a 1500 lb to 1800 lb winch will suffice. I read on Bass Pro's web site several negative reviews on their winches. Is there a difference in quality in one brand over another? Any info on Fulton winches?

    Thanks very much

    Larry

No matter which brand of winch you use, add a safety chain once the boat is on the trailer, and the winch just becomes a secondary safety device. The only thing I would look at when replacing a winch is the safety catch, 1) How the latch set up is on the winch. 2) is the metal latch junk or harden metal, 3) how much line will it hold and what diameter line. I have an 18 footer alum walleye boat that I put a new winch on and went with the largest size that would mount on the trailer. The larger size lets me bring in line much quicker than the smaller size winches.
