    Question Help Please!?

I have a 2004 Yamaha VMAX V150TLRD Outboard that sat all winter and was cranked up periodically throughout with no problems(its practically a new motor). I took it out at the start of the year went to crank it up and it sputtered and wouldnt hold a idle. It would start after alot of cranking on it and then the rpms would fall and die.Sometimes it would idle for a bit then sputter out. I got it to run enough to take a few rides to try to clear it out thinking it might of just been carboned up, but it just dies after i left off the gas.. I think it might be a gas issue seeing that this motor hasnt ever had any problem with it and has been taken care of. I see alot of guys on forums saying check the water separator for slime etc. I cant find the water separator, not sure if my motor has 1? I checked the plugs also and there fouled out after all the cranking and flooding i did trying to keep it running. I Really couldnt find much information or help. I dont want to take it in to the shop yet without trying to fix the problem myself. Any Advice or help would be appreciated. By the way its my fathers motor and hes disabled and cant really be messing with it so i really dont have a ton of knowledge on outboards so bare with me. Thanks

Did the gas sit all winter too? If so, drain the tank and run it in a vehicle and put new gas in the boat.

Yea the gas sat all winter, i put stabil in it at the beginning of winter. Didn't have a issue last year doing the same. I put a bottle of heat in it to see if it was moisture in gas and it still isn't running correctly. Still curious if there's a water separator on my motor. If its not that then i guess ill need to drain gas and go from there.. Thanks for your help.. Any more advice or information is appreciated guys

Follow your fuel line from the tank to the engine. A water separator will be a manifold with a filter screwed on the bottom of it. Sorta like an oil filter standing there all by its lonesome.

You can have a clogged fuel line, bad primer bulb, unpressurized tank, a vacuum on the tank from a closed or blocked vent, a failed or collapsed fuel line, trash in the carb...

You can also have a nick in an ignition wire of some sort sending spark to ground...

Sounds like your low speed jets in carbs are clogged, check all the things the other guy mentioned,if you dont have a fuelwater filter I would recommend adding one after you get it running. Will it run a idle with choke pushed in?

It periodically idles for a few seconds after alot of cranking and choking then it dies if u dont give it some gas and try to keep it going. Sometimes u will give it alot of throttle and it takes it a few seconds to catch up and rev. Ive tried to keep it running with the choke pushed in but that doesnt seem to help. Im thinking about draining the gas tank, but im almost positive the gas is perfectly fine do to stabil and it only sat for about 3 months and was cranked up a few times this winter.

I would start with draining all fuel, put some midgrade gas and heavy dose of marine sta-bil the green kind not red and see if you can get it running,if not to me it sounds like a carb rebuild, probably gummed up this ethanol in gas is killing the carb motors, let me know

If that doesnt work and you have to have carbs rebuilt I would highly recommend adding a 10 micron fuelwater seperater filter and burn midgrade gas and adding marine stabil every time you get gas and still crank it and let it run every 2 to 3 weeks

Check and clean the fuel filter. This uses an element in a can. Its the thing the fuel line runs to first when it enters the cowling.
