Oil filter

I'm in the process of getting everything ready for spring fishing. I can't seem to remove my old oil filter to replace it. My filter wrench is about 1/2" too big, and I can get a good enought grip on it to remove it any other way. Its on a 15hp 4 stroke motor. Anybody have any suggestions?

might sound crazy, but a few years back I had one stuck on a car so tight that it collapsed when I tried to get it off. I drove a screwdriver through it and turned it that way, maybe that would work for you.

Yeah, I've been there done that before. Thats my last resort, was hoping for something a little less messy. May be what I resort to though.

A strap wrench from Lowe's or get a smaller filter wrench.

I have the same problem and use thin cardboard (usually the oil filter box) and fold it up into a strip and wrap it around the oil filter to increase the diameter to fit the wrench... or if you have a large enough pipe wrench...

I think you have a Nissan or Tohatsu...... LOL. Been there. Walmart sells a filter wrench that will fit the back side of the filter. Short of that, I own a very large set of slip joint pliers, made by channel lock. They are about 20" from jaws to the ends of the handles.

These allow you to grasp the end of the filter and turn it in small movements and remove it that way.

The wrench from Walmart is available at most auto parts stores as well. Its a small cup like thing, or large socket if you will, that will fit on a 1/2" or 3/8" drive socket extension.

Great idea, I'm going to put that in my memory bank. I've done the screwdriver through a few to get them off also, very frustrating! Not to long ago I saw an oil filter, not sure what it was for, that had a nut on the end of it that you could put a socket on, my immediate thought was, why dont they all do that?? Seems simple enough and very low cost I would think.
