    Default 200 mercury head upgrade?

looking for some information before a friend of mine gets taking advantage of. He has his boat for sale it has 98 200 mercury optimax on it. a guy who wants to buy it talked to a dealer and the dealer says that this model may need an upgrade to the head. i dont know what's the reason for this. nothing is wrong as far as i can tell and the dealer has never seen the boat. i think he is trying to cut the price. anybody ever heard of upgrading the the head on this motor?maybe a factory recall? or bad head? or someone trying to pull a fast one? thanks for any info

Best thing to do is contact a dealer with the serial number of the motor and ask them.

Dont buy into that BS. He is selling a good motor that is running. Let the buyer worry about any upgrades.

Some early model Opti max motors had troubles with blowing head gaskets. Not all but some, i would say this is what the buyer has been told. They redesigned the head to keep this from happening.
I would say if it has many hours on it and has not popped a gasket yet then its not likely too. They were pretty quick to do it when new.
    Hope this helps.:D
There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

A 98 opti, thinking 98 was still efi. Go over to bass boat central, go to the mercury board and start a thread asking (europeanAM or sherm) along with serial number. He will answer your question. Sounds fishy to me.

If compression is good and it runs good, tell the guy to take a hike.
