Automatic Choke operation questions.

1994 OMC 3.0GS 4cyl I/O (GM block with Holley 2300 2bbl carb).

I'm not a mechanic but I am a quick study, however, I'm stuck at this operation.

I'm trying to get the engine to idle/start/run better. My carb was missing the electric choke so I bought one. One wire goes to ground, the other goes to the alternater. When starting the motor the butterfly stays open. I guess I expected it to close when trying to start and then just open where the bi-metallic spring holds it based on temperature. Basically as warm as it is probably open.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance. The motor has a mechanical fuel pump but I'm trying to tweak things for easier start, more consistent idle, and more reliable operation. The book shows high idle cam and such... but doesn't explain normal /expected behavior during starting or abrupt acceleration. The butterfly just hangs full open 100% of the time.

The last one of those I installed had to be installed in the closed position. As the motor warmed up, it opened up. If you manualy close the choke you will see linkage that raises the fast idle cam. Be for starting, advance the throttle once then bring it back to idle, then start. This sets the cam on high.
