Happy New Year everyone! Thought I would start it out right.
Headed to the River yesterday with no takers for fishing. Everyone was hunting, still celebrating or watching ballgames that would be won or lost.
Didn’t get on water till around nine thirty AM. First cast quality eleven inch fish sent him back to tell the others they were going to have a bad day. Some don’t believe in this release method. As the shorts return they sometimes figure out what’s going on.
With in an hour I had twenty fish captured. Most running thirteen plus inches. Of course figuring out quickly these fish wanted to be cast to rather than vertical fished to was the key. They wanted smaller profile baits. They wanted more natural looking baits.
But this caused a major problem! On the river I am fishing has some current and lots of structure. This means lots of jigs turn into ornaments on wood.
So the cheap smart fishermen will go to a lite wire hook when casting and reduce drag more than normal.
Another grave mistake for larger crappie. Long story short even using a net I lost two monster crappie right at the side of the boat. The big one always gets away. Right! I say the big one went back for another day for another experience for you or someone else.
Finishing a fishing report. I caught over fifty crappie that ran well over twelve inches and caught well over one hundred that ran less than twelve inches. But with these numbers I brought home to eat twelve that weren’t the largest but wasn’t the smallest. These were all measured at thirteen inches perfect eating size. Turned back several that were fifteen to sixteen inches and a ton of twelves which were the average lengths.
Here’s the kicker, I was off the water by two PM.
What a way to start the New Year! Who needs black eyed peas and cabbage.
