Rod Length

My Buddy and I fish out of his 17 foot aluminum boat. My position is the front seat. My question has to do with rod length. We do vertical jigging most of the time. So, what length rod would you guys suggest I use. My buddy says the farther away from the boat, the more bites I will get. So I ordered a 12 foot rod. It’s still in the mail. But someone said it would be hard to manage a 12 foot rod while vertical jigging, so what length rod would guys suggest I get?

I fish from a kayak and have all the way up to 14’ rods. I usually use 10’ or 11’ rods. The longer the rod the more it will wear you down. I enjoy the 10 probably the most. The main thing is balancing the rod so it isn’t extremely tip heavy.

And I’ve also used all out of a kayak heck I even cast with the 10 footer anymore. You just get use to it.

I sometimes jig with 16' BGJP, although I might pitch more with a 12' or 14' Crappie Thunder because the 16' BGJP control can get a little loose. I do use 14' and 16' BGJP for my spider rigging. My dad complains that the 16' sticks out past his 17' bass boat too far when he lays them down to move places, so he will break down one section to stow.
