Default Pecking like a bluegill .....

Keep this in mind , some of my outings are really good stuff , but it isn't because I ran around the lake looking for other folks brush piles and condos , it is because I set them in spots myself.
Do I care if folks hit the stuff I drop , certainly not , I drop the cover anticipating a day when I roll up and fish are on it.
If you follow my posts you might have seen the 2 February drops . one was a bare bamboo condo the other was leafed up bamboo condo . Both of these condos have produced fish , but keep a few things in mind about them. Most crappie sit on the perimeter of them , it is not common to ketch one in the middle of the mess. Often times the only thing actually in them are little fish hiding from bigger fish, so I rarely drop my jig right into them ..........
Well never say never , I decided to drop into the middle of the bare no leaf one the other day and jig it VERY light handed, heavy hands with a jig in the brush is a poor choice of presentation in most cases. Well down it went bouncing of the branches as it dropped....
It settled down around 2 foot or so off the bottom in the middle of the condo and I immediately got a peck , then a few more pecks and then it started to get on my nerves and during the next round of pecks I SET THE HOOK !
To Be very sure I was really unhappy when I hooked the condo .....or so it seemed at first...I actually had a momentary not so nice word pop out of my mouth about the bluegill that just got me hung up .....
Then it began twisting around and it became evident quickly that I just a hung a big catfish that was down in the condo , we tussled a bit and the twisting continues , I am just hoping at this point not to lose my jig .....
All the sudden the twist thing stops and a large fish bolts out straight away pulling drag !
I though heck it might be a bass and not a catfish , then I thought who cares , it made a huge mistake coming out of the condo to play and put the strong arm on it .....
it turned to me and came to the surface and holy you know batman it was really nice crappie .....
mind you this , not all fish that might hide inside a condo are created equal ....just saying
    and for sure ...
    KABOOM is near
p.s. you might ask yourself this ,do I want to go to all the way to Mississippi to ketch really big crappie on really long rods, nope not really ....

What a slab from the middle of a brush pile. I thought the only thing in the middle of those are green sunfish that grabs your jig and wrap you up. You never know if you don't stick your bait in the middle of the junk sometimes.

I won my first crappie tourney, back when I did those, out of some condos someone else put out and I stumbled into. One after the other, Ethan and I landed large fish after large fish. Had 18 in the live well at weigh in while others had 9 at best. Beat the crowd by over two pounds. Big fish like bamboo.

That’s an absolute stud you’re holding there and I’d be proud to be the man in the pic. Not a mark on it. Love the fight of a big crappie on a light rod. Great story and post, thanks for taking us along.
