Good Day Yesterday

The last couple of weekends have been pretty rough as far as putting fish in the boat. Even with livescope, I had three weekends of only catching a goo or not catching anything at all. Had an unexpected early day at work on Thursday, so with the Atchafalaya Basin in our area still not a good option, I made a quick trip to a small lake nearby to see if I could find a few fish. The majority of the fish were no longer on the cypress trees like they were the last time I went about a month ago, but I still found a lot of fish roaming in 3-4' of water not far from trees. It was pretty frustrating, though, because I watched fish after fish swim up to my bait and either not bite at all, or just nip at it and then swim away. I tried changing colors, downsizing, changing presentations, etc. and couldn't get them to bite consistently. Ended up catching just four small fish. I had at least four that I had at the boat that were 12-13", but because they were just hitting the tail of the jig, they came off (I tried removing part of the tail to make an even smaller profile, but they still wouldn't grab the whole jig).

Since I knew there were fish there, I decided to try again Sunday, but this time, I figured the surest way to have a chance was to go with shiners. Made all the difference. The bigger fish were no longer shallow. They were grouped together in about 5-6' of water underneath duck blinds. On this day, when the bite slowed some on shiners, I was able to catch a few on a black/silver/white hair jig (under a slip cork), a blue/white tube jig (slip cork), and slow reeling a blue/white curly tail jig.

The days when they are really stubborn can be very frustrating, but whenever I have a day like yesterday, makes it all worthwhile, and for that, I am very thankful.
