dock with 20 or 30 gallon barrels, comments please

The reason for smaller barrels are that it's getting harder to get out of my boat onto a 55 gallon barrel dock. My question is --how low in the water will 20 gallon barrel dock set with a standard 2x6 treated and 3/4 plywood top say dock is 8x16x size of barrels . Anyone do this yet. good and bad please. Just getting too stiff and too old to jump up on the dock. Thanks

Add some weight in the 55 gallon drums as needed to acquire the correct height. Should make the dock more stable. Just my opinion, never build a dock with drums but have floated some duck blinds.

get you a chair lift that will raise you up and swivel over to the dock and get out. problem solved. i'm surprised you didn't think of that. and one thing you said is correct. you are too old

my 55 gallon dock doesn't set more than 3-4 inches in the water, I use the max amount of barrels for the size of the dock. never was good at Math but more is better???

Rocket Rich hasn't been on the site since 2015, so I doubt he will see your question. Hopefully, someone else with experience will chime in and give you their experience/advice.

It’s tough to determine, you could just let a bit of water into the barrels to lower the dock

Agree with Ketchn, just add water to desired height.
We had catwalks on catch ponds made of steel grading and two inch tubing and three to four inch I-beam.
The drums near the bank had less to no water in them and the ones at the end might be half full.
It gave the walk a slight incline and out at the end where the drums were half filled kept the walk closer to the water so we could sample and test the water before it was dumped into the river.
Another thought, if you will use black drums they draw more heat and fish will congregate under them better. It keeps the water warmer.

When fishing docks or around house boats on the river, if I spot black plastic drums that’s where I find most of the time my first victims.
If you find docks or house boats with white drums or even blue check it out. I think you will find this to be true as I did, the black drum structure holds more fish.
