On Saturday at 2 pm Austin and I launched at Main St. The water was down further than I've ever seen it. Great time to check out all the downed trees and structure that is normally under water. Water was raising hard and the water temp was a chilly 46 F. We caught a few at different spots but never found any large number of sacalait grouped together. The further south spots were vacant of any fish probably due to the very very low water and as the tide rose it pushed in salty lake water up the bayou. Ended up keeping 4 nice blacks and threw back about double that in tacos. The sacalait had large yellow sacks of eggs which I discovered when I cleaned the fish for dinner. All fish caught on Bobby G baby shad plastics. Color didn't seem to matter. The fish were caught off the very bottom which in Bayou Lacombe is usually around 10 to 14 ft. deep at its deepest points.
Put it on the trailer by 5 pm as the wind picked up and it started to get uncomfortably cold for these Southeran boys. The 3 hour trip assured us that some blacks are already spawning and that they are not grouped up on structure yet.
Bon Temps!!
