Default Athletes do it so why not us .....or them ....

them need it for sure , right into an ice bath right out of the lake ......
this time of year it's pretty critical to chill em fast as you rip em out of the water .....
someone said it probably hurts the fish and I tend to think maybe slightly , but not likely , the chill down that fast is a shock to them and they pass pretty quickly
and that for sure beats a smack in the head or a warm water slow livewell death and or a stringer drag around beat you down program or a nice rash basket until you give up ......sides all dat ....
nothing much beats a firm cold crappie when it's time to filet them
we like to have a slush ice in our ice chest , it chills the entire fish much better than just ice , just ice in the chests often has a fish against a fish that discolors them and those get soft and pale and look like they been dead for a day or 3 , due to the lack of instant chill and the warm water they come from this time of year ....
    just saying

slush ice bro is for sure the ticket , tried all the rest of it , the ice blocks in the livewell is also a close second if there is enough in there to keep em chilled down hard

I couldn't agree more. Icing them down makes them easier to fillet and I'm sure they taste better as well. Certainly more humane. I add a little salt as well.

My fishing partner and I always put our bluegills on ice, made them much easier to clean. I normally don't crappie fish when it's hot.

We dont get the super high water temps you guys down south do, so i just run fresh water in the livewell no recirc and they stay fresh as can be. I pull the plug and grab a bag of ice at the gas station across the street when leaving the ramp.

The worst thing is when you catch 2 nice ones in a row right away and put them on ice only to catch dinks the rest of the day... Now you gotta clean 2 fish or find someone to give them to. And that is ALWAYS my luck when i have a cooler of ice for my fish
