Varivas Line Question.

I need to replace the line on a couple of my reels. They are on St. Croix UL rods, 5 and 5 1/2 feet. I normally fish either Stren or Berkley monofilament, usually 4 lb and occasionally 6 lb. I thought I might give the Varivas a try. What would be a good Varivas replacement. I mostly cast and retrieve small jigs or small plugs of one kind or another.

If you're looking for fantastic nylon line try the Twitch Master. It comes in multiple pound ratings...very low stretch...supple...great casting distance...great knot strength. When I use nylon this is all I use. Have reels spooled up with the 3 and 4 pound test. Don't overlook other great Varivas lines...polyester and FC.

VARIVAS Twitch Master low stretch mono and Sight Edition mono are VARIVAS America's 2 best selling light mono lines.

One (of several) big differences between VARIVAS lines and typical brands sold in the US, is that VARIVAS line is much thinner, yet supports heavier break strength. (or perhaps the US brands under-rate their break strength.) VARIVAS's advertised break strength is actual true break strength, or pretty darn close to it.

Case in point:

4 lb Stren or Berkley mono has a diameter of 0.008in (0.205mm).
This same diameter mono has a 6 lb max. break strength in VARIVAS mono models: Absolute CB, Sight Edition, Bush Trail, and Twitch Master.
and an 8 lb max. break strength in models: Game, Super Trout Advance, Big Trout, and Katchi-Iro

6 lb Stren or Berkley mono has a diameter of 0.009 in (0.22mm).
This is close to VARIVAS 8 lb mono models: Absolute CB, Sight Edition, Bush Trail, and Twitch Master
and 10 lb max. break strength in models: Game and Super Trout Advance, Big Trout, and Katchi-Iro

Another key difference in VARIVAS mono line is that it has less stretch and doesn't get all over stretched out.
As mentioned by others in this Forum, Twitch Master (100m/110yds) has the least stretch of all VARIVAS mono lines. The Super Trout Advance (regular version) has more stretch than VARIVAS's other models. All other models fall somewhere in between.

Here's more info about the different mono lines

- Twitch Master VLS- very low stretch nylon (100m/110yds, champagne color)
- Sight Edition (100 & 150m, chartreuse)

- The Absolute CB mono (100m, clear color) is designed and marketed for Bass fishing, and is ultra-abrasion resistant.
- The Bush Trail mono (100m, hi viz neon red color) is marketed for stream fishing and is made of the same ultra-abrasion resistant nylon as the Absolute CB model.

- The following models are made out the VARIVAS's VA-G nylon material:
--- The Game nylon (in 91 yds and 150m, clear color, marketed for saltwater).
--- The Super Trout Advance (regular model - in 100m, 150, 300m, translucent brown),
--- Big Trout (150m, translucent gold color)
--- Big Trout Katchi-Iro (150m, burgundy color)

VARIVAS Twitch Master comes in only 100m (110 yd) spools.

Because you asked about line length, I went back and edited my post above to include available lengths for the different models of nylon mono that VARIVAS sells.

Good question. If it is thinner than Stren or Trilene it will take more to fill up my spool. I know some folks will say wind some backing on first. But I'd rather just wind on one line without having to join two lines together. Yeah I know. It's a way to save money by using something cheap for backing. Call me frivolous.

Get you some shallow spool reels and that will take care of that problem. I ditched deep spool reels back in 2011 and haven’t looked back. Some of the Varivas lines I use are as fine as a human hair….0.074mm. Have never used backing on any of the shallow spool reels I own. I made the switch to Japanese lines about five years back. I tried a lot of JDM lines. All of them were good but when I ran into Varivas lines I ditched all the others.

Well, I ordered two spools of Twitch Master. I'll see how it works for me and my particular style of fishing. Saved some money because I got a $10 discount for signing in my first time. It is not an inexpensive line but hopefully it is as good as people say. The ordering process was a tad annoying. I believe it's because their web site must not be Android tablet friendly but I stumbled around and got it done. Thanks for the tips folks.
