Trying to Make It Tough On Theives

Well I had a new project this weekend. After stopping at one of my local diners for a quick bite, I realized I did not have enough security on my boat to keep my tackle and rods from being swiped if I turned my back more than three seconds. So I decided to take an idea from the TH marine locker bar system. I just didn’t want to pay the almost $400 price tag for their idea. Plus that product from TH does not work on aluminum boats. So I decided to build my own. I have a 2006 Lowe Stinger 195 aluminum boat with some big hatches and rod locker at the front deck of the boat. The lockers did not come with locking latches from the factory. So I fabricated some brackets out of 1 1/2” x 1/8“ thick aluminum angle and then used metal EMT conduit three-quarter inch diameter and half inch diameter so they would slide inside each other across the floor of the boat across the hatch lids and then drilled a through hole through the center of both the pipes and placed a padlock in the hole. The deck on my boat is made out of aluminum so I pre-drilled holes in used 1 1/4”stainless steel rivets and stainless steel screws to secure the brackets to the deck of the boat. I know this might not be Fort Knox security type equipment and if someone has enough time, tools, and determination to get my stuff they will get it. This will slow down or deter most snatch and grab opportunity thieves or force people to make a bunch of noise to try to lift my gear.
